Update – After some years the list was kind of outdated, here are some additional applications that I have recently used the most:

This is yet another list of favorite iPhone 3G applications available from the Apple App Store. Actually, it is not ordered top 10 list, but just a list of the 10 applications that I found most useful. No games are included since games qualify for their own top 10 list. Listed is also mainly free applications since I have only bought a couple of applications at this time. The list will be updated as new and better applications arrive at App Store.

Remote
With Remote, you can control the music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPod touch or iPhone. Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs, playlists, and album art on your iPod touch or iPhone as if you were right in front of your computer. Remote is free and works with your Wi-Fi network, so you can control playback from anywhere in and around your home.
FileMagnet (NOT FREE 30DDK)
FileMagnet makes it easy to copy files from your Mac and view them on your iPhone and iPod touch. It supports all the common file types, including PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, images, movies, sounds and even folders. By running the FileMagnet Uploader on your Mac, you can wirelessly copy files over your wi-fi network. FileMagnet also lets you copy files from your phone to another mac – use your iPhone like a hard drive!
Constraints: It only works with Mac, one more thing that Windows users mustÂ miss.
Benzin Priser (A danish specific app)
The application uses the FDM Benzin Priser service to get the latest gas-prices for your current area (GPS Support), or the latest prices for your regular gas stations. Reporting prices from the application to help others get gas cheaper is easy.
Constraints: How usable this application is in your area rely on the frequency of gas prices reported.
Facebook
Facebook for iPhone makes it easy to stay connected and share information with friends. Use your iPhone to start conversations with Facebook Chat, check your friends’ latest photos and status updates, look up a phone number, or upload your own mobile phothos to Facebook whole on the go.
Palringo Instant Messenger

WordPress

Nokia 6300 Firmware/Software Update Download

This page is a discussion forum for new firmware updates for the Nokia 6300 from the version 5.00 and forth software releases. The version 5.00 firmware update introduced an issue, namely, that the feature of toggling the silent-profile by pressing and holding the #-key disappeared. Updating to the newer version 5.50 of the Nokia 6300 firmware, however, solved this problem together with the following software updates:

The Call Log – the list of missed calls, received calls, and dialled numbers – have been updated with new icons that are easier to see and comprehend, and slightly more colorful.
The option of enabling navigation key icons on the background showing which applications are available from the four direction in the navigation key (this might not be a new feature, however I have not seen it before I think)
The bluetooth menu seems to be improved a bit.

Please follow the comments discussion to gain insights on the newest software releases for the Nokia 6300.

Just to remember, checking the current software version on the phone is done by entering the following code: *#0000#, and checking the newest available version of the Nokia phone software can be done at this Nokia site. Doing the last mentioned will also provide a link to the specific phone product software, else just download the Nokia Software Updater to update the phone.

Since I wrote this post newer versions of the Nokia 6300 firmware has been released, and different people have been very nice to follow up and describe the content of these updates in their comments. I, on the contrary, have moved on the real deal – the iPhone, and because I no longer own a Nokia 6300, I will no longer be able to bring updates on the Nokia 6300. However, I hope that you people will continue commenting on the future updates for the Nokia 6300.

Nokia 6300, iSync Plugin, and Contact Photos

Here is some iSync plugins for the Nokia 6300; the first two works pretty stable, and the last has support of contact photos and birthdays, but is might cause some errors to the iSync synchronization process. All plugins should be compatible with Leopard.

Here is what to do:

Download one of the following plugins:
- Nokia 6300 iSync plugin
- Nokia 6300 iSync plugin supports birthdays

- Nokia 6300 iSync plugin supports birthdays and contact photos

(using the last mentioned read these notes)
Extract the Nokia6300.phoneplugin.zip (your browser might do it for you).
Quit iSync if its running
Double click the Nokia 6300 Plugin
Drag and drop the green folder on the blue one
Start iSync, and the Nokia 6300 should be supported

Additional notes and issues:

iSync only synchronizes the contacts you have on the phone and not on the SIM-card. View this comment.
All-day events in iCal appears as events with start and end time at the same hour in the phones calendar 6300 when synchronized, e.g. 14:00-14:00 according to the time zone.

Notes and issues on synchronizing contact photos:

If you add contact photos on the phone and then synchronizes, it should work fine.
But if the photos are added in the Address Book on your mac, some issues are present. Although it works in Address Book adding photos to contacts, it does not always work according to the synchronization part. If a photo is added and you have used the embedded ‘image edit’ pop-up window, then when it comes to iSync your entire sync will fail. But adding photos is still possible, if you have a photo you like to add to a certain contact, just drag it to the information area of the contact, and if the image edit pop-up appears just press Cancel, and in most cases the photo is added anyways.
If iSync fails because of the above, you are not told what failed, or why it failed.

Browser for Mobile Phones

The embedded phone browser in many phones are not very usefull. Opera Mini is a reasonable alternative, and recently Opera Software released a Opera Mini 4 Beta version with some new exciting features. However, it seem like they changed the default search engine from Google to Yahoo! for some incomprehensible reason.

Nokia 6300 – Apple iPhone Theme

If you like to tweak your Nokia phone with a little iPhone touch, a nice theme is available, and it is compatible with the Nokia 6300 (my previous phone before I got the real deal – the iPhone 3G). Furthermore, Adobe Photoshop files are included in the theme pack, which enable you to make new backgrounds for the iPhone theme with the transparent iPhone overlay graphics.

Nokia 6300 iSync Plugin (Snow Leopard Compatible)

Here is a freely available plugin to make the Nokia 6300 work using iSync, and it is actually fairly easy to make a such plugin, which encompass the solution described in my previous post on the Nokia 6300 iSync issue.

Here is what to do:

Download the Nokia 6300 iSync plugin
“UPDATED 28MAY2008″
Extract the Nokia6300.phoneplugin.zip (your browser might do it for you).
Quit iSync if its running
Double click the Nokia 6300 Plugin
Drag and drop the green folder on the blue one

Syncronize Google Calendar with mobile phones using GCalSync

Setup and Use GMail on Your Phone

There is a couple of ways to use GMail on your phone, the two first-mentioned are recommended:

Use the GMail application on your mobile, go to gmail.com/app on your mobile device’s web browser and download. The application features viewing attachments you receive in messages, including photos, Microsoft Word documents, and PDF files. More info…
Use the lightweight GMail on your mobile, go to http://m.gmail.com on your mobile device’s web browser. If you connect your computer to the internet using GPRS on your phone via bluetooth, it might be a good idea to use lightweight GMail to economize some of the expensive data transfer. The normal GMail web application will load over 200KB in the initial load, while the lightweight version loads about 10KB. More info on setting up a internet connection on your computer via bluetooth with a phone.
Your phone might have a build in email application on your phone, e.g. the Nokia 6300 has an application that features support for setting up GMail access through POP3.

Java SSH Client for Nokia phones

Nokia 6300 Mac OS X Theme

I found a Mac OS X theme for the Nokia 6300 in this thread, it’s pretty nice.

I also found this iPhone theme for the Nokia Series 40 phones, but somehow it does not seem to work on the 6300 as different people have posted in the thread. Hopefully it will be available soon…

Setup Internet Connection via Bluetooth using Nokia 6300 on Mac OS X

Here is a brief introduction on how to setup a GPRS internet connection on the Nokia 6300 via bluetooth (or another nokia phone for the matter).

Follow the steps bellow, and it might just work out for you.

First of all you must have a working GPRS configuration on the phone from your network operator. My danish operator allows me to order the configuration for the Nokia 6300 from their website, then it is sent directly to the phone, where it is saved.
Enable bluetooth on the phone.
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant on your Mac.
Press Continue.
Choose Mobile phone and press Continue.
When your Mac has found your phone, choose it and press Continue.
When your Mac has gathered information about your device press Continue.

To allow bluetooth connection, you are given a random passkey to enter on the phone to accept the connection between the computer and the phone.
Check the Access the internet with your phone’s data connection option and choose Use direct, higher speed connection to reach your Internet service Provider (GPRS, 1xRTT), and press Continue.
For my phone network operator I do not need to fill ind the username and password, but the field GPRS CID String must be given a value according to GPRS configuration on the phone, I used *99***1#, as Modem Script the standard Nokia Infrared works.
Now the setup is finished, and it should be possible to connect to the internet through the phone.
Click on the bluetooth icon in the menu bar, and select Join Network on your-phone, and you should be happy surfing through a very slow internet connection.

How to iSync a Nokia 6300 on Mac OS X

The Nokia 6300 do not appear in the list of supported phones for the iSync application in Mac OS X. Nokia has neither made a plug-in available yet, but it is possible relatively easy to make the iSync work. Here is at short guide to make it work:

Make sure iSync is not running.
Locate the iSync application in the Applications folder, and select Show Package Contents.
Locate the MetaClasses.plist file at this path: Contents > PlugIns > ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice > Contents > PlugIns > PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin > Contents > Resources.
Back-up the MetaClasses.plist file just to be safe.
Open MetaClasses.plist with a ordinary text editor, e.g. TextMate.

The trick is to find a phone in the XML list with the same operating system as the Nokia 6300 phone, which is the Nokia Series 40, 3rd edition, with Bluetooth and USB. The Nokia 6280 fits this requirement, and the below XML is a copy of the 6280 XML entry with changes to fit the 6300, which should be inserted below the 6280 entry.[ad code=1 align=left]

Alternative: Copy the 6300 XML from this link

If the USB connection is to be used for the iSync with the Nokia 6300, e.g. if you do not have a bluetooth device on the computer, then change the com.apple.usb.vendorid-modelid XML setting from 0×0421/0x045A to 0×0421/0x04F9

Add this phone icon NOK6300.tiff in the same folder as the MetaClasses.plist file. It is important that the file name matches the one in the XML definition.
Now it should work… Save and close the MetaClasses.plist file and start up iSync. Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Select Add Device… from the iSync Devices menu. iSync should find your Nokia 6300, and display the icon that you just added.

Additional notes:

- When to the bluetooth connection is setup properly, it’s also easy to put music on the phone. Just select Browse Device… in the dropdown under the bluetooth icon in the menu bar, and browse to memory card and drop your music.
