Using Windows XP the option of opening a command prompt (cmd.exe) in a specific directory required that you installed the Windows XP PowerToy “Open Command Window Here“.

This probably not breaking news. However, I just found out that the “Open Command Window Here” option is available in the right-click context menu in Windows 7 by default. When you do a regular RIGHT-CLICK on a folder, you will not see it:

But when you do a SHIFT + RIGHT-CLICK more options are revealed – woooop… here it is:

Actually I think this is a pretty neat feature usability-wise, normal – non developer – users, probably do not have any need for this option at all, but I do.

Browsers ability to make users adopt new versions

I recently came across these charts showing different browsers ability to make users adopt the new versions. As you can see this works very well for the Google Chrome browser having automatic updates:

FireFox is getting better at this also, though it seems many users stick with the 3.6 version:

W3C Geolocation API (HTML5)

I have fiddled a little bit with the W3C Geolocation API and made the below demo on how to detect the user’s location within a browser. The demo uses HTML5 and the Google Maps API V3, which is designed to load faster, especially on mobile browsers such as Android-based devices and the iPhone.

Currently, several ways exist to detect the user’s location within a browser. None of these methods are part of the Google Maps API; instead, they are common industry standards.
Newer browsers are starting to support the W3C Geolocation standard. This standard is part of HTML5 and will likely become the de-facto standard going forward. All applications that wish to perform geolocation should support this standard.
Some browsers with Google Gears can use Google Gears Geolocation API. Since widespread support for the W3C standard is still forthcoming, checking for Gears is a good fallback mechanism.
Some browsers use IP addresses to detect a user’s location, though this provides only a very rough estimate.

bbPress One Forum Only – Permanent Redirect

Problem:

bbPress supports multiple forums by default, and does not include options to support a only a single forum.

Solution (redirect hack):

Replace the contents of your template’s front-page.php with this code to permanently redirect the forums site to your preferred single forum. “http://www.example.com/forums/forum-slug” must be the direct URL to the single forum you want to show:

This will permanently redirect users from the frontpage to the specific forum.

Change bbPress Installation URL Path

Problem:

You have installed bbPress using the default url, i.e. http://www.example.com/bbpress/, and now you want move your bbPress installation to e.g. http://www.example.com/forums/

Solution:

Make a copy the of the “bbpress” folder and name it “forums”.
In the bbPress administration “Settings > General” change the bbPress address (URL) to the new url “http://www.example.com/forums/”.
Open the .htaccess file in the root of the new bbPress location “/forums”, and replace “bbpress” with “forums”.
Save the .htaccess file, and reload page using the new url, i.e. http://www.example.com/forums/.
The page is now moved.
Clean up and delete the old “/bbPress” folder.

Fix: AVG Installation/Update Error

While doing an update of the AVG Antivirus Free Edition to version 9.0, I got an unexpected registry error:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key….
Error 0×80070005

Googling the problem offered me lots complex solutions with varying results, however I found a very easy solution on how to fix the issue:

Download the AVG Remover tool for either 32 bit Windows or 64 bit Windows
Run the AVG Remover tool to uninstall the current version of AVG, it will require restart.
Download the Dial-a-Fix tool.
Run the Dial-a-Fix tool and hit the button with the hammer icon (see screenshot below).
In the dialog locate and select Repair Permissions in list and hit the GO button (see screenshot below).
Let the tool do its magic.
Download the new version of AVG – AVG Download Manager or Full Installation Package (100+Mb)
Run installation of AVG, it should complete with success.
Enjoy!

Step 4) The Dial-a-Fix tool (hit the button with the hammer icon)

Step 5) Select Repair Permissions and hit the GO button.

The danish public service channels from “Danmarks Radio” can be streamed and viewed directly from QuickTime, iTunes, VLC player etc. on both Mac and Windows by downloading a few channel files (.mov). This of course also opens the option to stream and view the channels in Frontrow on Mac:

Reduce MacBook Noise by Cleaning Fan

For some time my 3 year old black MacBook has been having an increasing whizzing sound from the build-in cooling fan, and furthermore the temperature seemed to be increasing more over time than normal. I was quite sure that the noisy fan and the heat sink was filled up with dust, which would be the reason for the fan to run more than usual. A couple of days ago I finally pulled myself together, and disassembled my MacBook to find out whether I was right.

I found the following guide on how to open the MacBook, and followed it precisely until step number 12:

From step 12, it was all about figuring out how clean the fan and heat sink. In order to do so, the fan had to be removed from its location.

How to remove cooling fan

The above image shows how to do it. The two screws (marked with circles) must be removed, and the tape (marked with rectangles) must be loosened. Finally the fan can be snapped out of its connector. Removing the fan revealed quite an amount of dust beween the fan and the heat sink, and the fan itself was also covered with dust. To clean the fan and heat sink I use cotton buds and a vacuum cleaner (be carefull using the vacuum cleaner on the motherboard). I believe the blowing compressed air on the part will be a more safe method to remove dust than the vacuum cleaner.

UPDATE: This is a complete guide on how to remove the MacBook fan: MacBook Core 2 Duo Fan Removal. From this point you can jump to my conclusion in the bottom.

Conclusion:
After assembling my MacBook again, I found that the fan is run less that before my little operation, and also not as loud as before. It is not as soundless as when the MacBook was all new, but anyway I can recommend doing the effort of cleaning the fan and heat sink.

Boot Camp: Windows 7 on iMac – Fix Black Screen

Recently I was making a Boot Camp installation of Windows 7 on my iMac, however, it did not go as smoothly as expected. During the installation process the screen went infinitely black, and it was not possible to continue the installation process.

Software versions:

Boot Camp 3.0 (Mac OS X Snow Leopard)
Windows 7

Doing a little search, I found the following solution on how to fix the problem.

Solution (step by step from the beginning):

Run Boot Camp Assistant from Mac OS X Snow Leopard (Applications -> Utilities)
Create a partition for the Windows installation using Boot Camp Assistant
Plugin your install disc and install Windows 7
The system will reboot a couple of times during the installation
The problem: The second time the system reboots, you the see the Windows red-green-blue-yellow animated logo, and then the screen goes black and hangs infinitely.
Press and hold the power button on your iMac until it shuts down.
Start the iMac again holding “alt” key, so you can select and load Max OS X Snow Leopard again.
Run any application that let you work with NTFS partitions (e.g. Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X or MacFuse)
Find the file “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ATIKMDAG.SYS” on your BOOTCAMP partition, and simply delete it.
Restart you iMac, and boot up Windows 7
Now Windows 7 should boot normally
Run update windows utility and install Boot Camp drivers from the Mac OS X install disc

Boot Camp: Create Partition Error – Files cannot be moved

Recently I was about to install a Windows 7 beta using Boot Camp on my iMac, but it did not succeed due to an error. I was setting the Windows partition to 80 GB with plenty of free space available.

Then I got this error, namely “The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved”:

But I did not like the idea of formatting my hard drive due to fix the issue, and make Boot Camp work. However, I found an other solution to the problem, namely installing tool to defragment the hard drive. Defragmentation is not something you usually do on a Mac, but here it came in handy. I found these two tool to do the trick:

Drive Genius

What the tools basically do, is that they are able to moved the files, which for some reason is blocking the Boot Camp Partitioning.

If you like me would like to have the opportunity to watch digital HD TV on your Mac, here is my recommendations. Recently I bought a product from Elgato, namely the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid, which I am actually quite satisfied with.

XBMC / Plex

XBMC or Plex (build on XBMC) is only related to the EyeTV in sense of making your Mac a better media center. They both have a visually appealing user interface that provides instant access to your media. They can play a wide range of video, audio and photo formats as well as online streaming audio and video. The real power of these applications are found in its library features, I especially like that it can automatically retrieve movie metadata from IMDb; imagery, description, rating etc. Whether to select XBMC or Plex might be a subjective matter.

Disable “call forwarding active” popup on iPhone

After I changed my Service Provider from Telia (Denmark) to Telmore (Demark), a little popup is shown – “Call Forwarding Active” each I make a call. This is quite annoying… an easy way to remove this is by using GSM codes:

Read Mac-formatted hard drives on Windows

HFSExplorer is a free application that can read Mac-formatted hard disks and disk images. It can read the file systems HFS (Mac OS Standard), HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) and HFSX (Mac OS Extended with case sensitive file names).

HFSExplorer allows you to browse your Mac volumes with a graphical file system browser, extract files (copy to hard disk), view detailed information about the volume and create disk images from the volume. HFSExplorer can also read most .dmg disk images created on a Mac, including zlib / bzip2 compressed images and AES-128 encrypted images. It supports the partition schemes Master Boot Record, GUID Partition Table and Apple Partition Map natively.

Apple iTunes DJ – Queue Songs

Finally it is possible to queue up songs in iTunes, this has been a missing feature.
