GastroMand.dk is a new danish website with recipes and reviews on food and drinks.

Here is a short description of the website by the authors:

On GastroMand we hate Anne Larsen and her girl talk in the kitchen – in return we love to make and eat good food with flavor and style (with all what that implies), so whatever you’re into homemade hot dog wearing a football shirt in front of the telly or Foie Gras at Fat Duck in London GastroMand is the place. We undertake to be the only place on the web where food and male jargon all comes together!
On GastroMand, we also take pride in providing recipes and reviews in a language that makes you always want to understand what we say, and not least mean, when we give our raw and unsweetened criticism, and “swings the knife” of everything from sausages over Christmas beer to champagne and Denmark’s most expensive (and cheap) restaurants!

Free TV Channels

The danish public service channels from “Danmarks Radio” can be streamed and viewed directly from QuickTime, iTunes, VLC player etc. on both Mac and Windows by downloading a few channel files (.mov). This of course also opens the option to stream and view the channels in Frontrow on Mac:

Reduce MacBook Noise by Cleaning Fan

For some time my 3 year old black MacBook has been having an increasing whizzing sound from the build-in cooling fan, and furthermore the temperature seemed to be increasing more over time than normal. I was quite sure that the noisy fan and the heat sink was filled up with dust, which would be the reason for the fan to run more than usual. A couple of days ago I finally pulled myself together, and disassembled my MacBook to find out whether I was right.

I found the following guide on how to open the MacBook, and followed it precisely until step number 12:

From step 12, it was all about figuring out how clean the fan and heat sink. In order to do so, the fan had to be removed from its location.

How to remove cooling fan

The above image shows how to do it. The two screws (marked with circles) must be removed, and the tape (marked with rectangles) must be loosened. Finally the fan can be snapped out of its connector. Removing the fan revealed quite an amount of dust beween the fan and the heat sink, and the fan itself was also covered with dust. To clean the fan and heat sink I use cotton buds and a vacuum cleaner (be carefull using the vacuum cleaner on the motherboard). I believe the blowing compressed air on the part will also be a good method to fix it.

Conclusion:
After assembling my MacBook again, I found that the fan is run less that before my little operation, and also not as loud as before. It is not as soundless as when the MacBook was all new, but anyway I can recommend doing the effort of cleaning the fan and heat sink.

Boot Camp: Windows 7 on iMac – Fix Black Screen

Recently I was making a Boot Camp installation of Windows 7 on my iMac, however, it did not go as smoothly as expected. During the installation process the screen went infinitely black, and it was not possible to continue the installation process.

Software versions:

Boot Camp 3.0 (Mac OS X Snow Leopard)
Windows 7

Doing a little search, I found the following solution on how to fix the problem.

Solution (step by step from the beginning):

Run Boot Camp Assistant from Mac OS X Snow Leopard (Applications -> Utilities)
Create a partition for the Windows installation using Boot Camp Assistant
Plugin your install disc and install Windows 7
The system will reboot a couple of times during the installation
The problem: The second time the system reboots, you the see the Windows red-green-blue-yellow animated logo, and then the screen goes black and hangs infinitely.
Press and hold the power button on your iMac until it shuts down.
Start the iMac again holding “alt” key, so you can select and load Max OS X Snow Leopard again.
Run any application that let you work with NTFS partitions (e.g. Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X or MacFuse)
Find the file “C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ATIKMDAG.SYS” on your BOOTCAMP partition, and simply delete it.
Restart you iMac, and boot up Windows 7
Now Windows 7 should boot normally
Run update windows utility and install Boot Camp drivers from the Mac OS X install disc

Boot Camp: Create Partition Error – Files cannot be moved

Recently I was about to install a Windows 7 beta using Boot Camp on my iMac, but it did not succeed due to an error. I was setting the Windows partition to 80 GB with plenty of free space available.

Then I got this error, namely “The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved”:

But I did not like the idea of formatting my hard drive due to fix the issue, and make Boot Camp work. However, I found an other solution to the problem, namely installing tool to defragment the hard drive. Defragmentation is not something you usually do on a Mac, but here it came in handy. I found these two tool to do the trick:

iDefrag (I used this)

Drive Genius

What the tools basically do, is that they are able to moved the files, which for some reason is blocking the Boot Camp Partitioning.

XBMC / Plex

XBMC or Plex (build on XBMC) is only related to the EyeTV in sense of making your Mac a better media center. They both have a visually appealing user interface that provides instant access to your media. They can play a wide range of video, audio and photo formats as well as online streaming audio and video. The real power of these applications are found in its library features, I especially like that it can automatically retrieve movie metadata from IMDb; imagery, description, rating etc. Whether to select XBMC or Plex might be a subjective matter.

HFSExplorer is a free application that can read Mac-formatted hard disks and disk images. It can read the file systems HFS (Mac OS Standard), HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) and HFSX (Mac OS Extended with case sensitive file names).

HFSExplorer allows you to browse your Mac volumes with a graphical file system browser, extract files (copy to hard disk), view detailed information about the volume and create disk images from the volume. HFSExplorer can also read most .dmg disk images created on a Mac, including zlib / bzip2 compressed images and AES-128 encrypted images. It supports the partition schemes Master Boot Record, GUID Partition Table and Apple Partition Map natively.

Finally it is possible to queue up songs in iTunes, this has been a missing feature.

In iTunes 8.1, the Party Shuffle feature introduced in April 2004 has been rechristened iTunes DJ. While this feature has been around for some time, Apple added some new functionality specifically designed for iPod touch and iPhone users.

The new iTunes DJ features lets iPhone and iPod touch users vote on upcoming tracks.

With iTunes DJ, iPhone users that have Apple’s Remote application installed can request songs to be played. Users can also vote to control when songs are played. The DJ feature even has its own preferences, so you can send a welcome message to users and control whether voting is turned on or off. You can also require users to type in a password to access iTunes DJ’s features.

iPhone Safari Crash Fix

No doubt iPhone’s Safari browser is the best mobile browser, though it seems to have an unfortunate issue, namely, that it tend to periodically crash after a longer time of use with multiple pages. Safari shuts down and returns to the home screen. On the Apple Discussion Forum it seems that more people have experienced the same as I.

I am sure that Apple is aware of the problem, and continuously will provide stability fixes for the iPhone. However, running the latest version, which at this moment is the iPhone 2.1 firmware/software, the iPhone still have stability problems. Hopefully this will change in the next version, the iPhone 2.2 software.

However, it is possible to prevent the iPhone Safari from crashing, though it is not a permanent fix:

You can try to clear the Cache, Cookies and History. To do this, go to Settings > Safari and tap Clear Cache, Clear Cookies and Clear History.
If that is ineffective, try makeing a soft reset of your iPhone by holding down the Sleep and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears (about 8 second). Note that this is also how you power the iPhone off. When the “Slide to power off” slider appears, just keep holding the buttons down and pretty soon you will see the Apple logo appears, indicating that the iPhone is reseting. This can help reset some apps that may be running in the background. Importantly you will not lose any data.

Use Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset with MacBook

After I bought my Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset for my iPhone a thought came to my mind, namely, whether it was possible to pair the headset with my MacBook and using it together with e.g. Skype.

Pairing the iPhone headset with the MacBook can be done seamlessly, just go to the Bluetooth in the menu bar, select “Set up Bluetooth Device…” and choose “Headset”, then press and hold the headset button for about eight seconds, until you hear the startup tone and then five quick high beeps. The headset is now discoverable and will remain so for about five minutes. The status light blinks green while the headset is discoverable.

Unfortunately, I believe that the audio quality over Bluetooth is quite unsatisfying, it seems to be poor and a bit crackly. Therefore it is kind of tricky to recommend using the Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset for that purpose.

MacBook: SATA150 vs. SATA300

Backward compatibility between SATA150 and SATA300 devices was intended, therefore SATA300 controllers were designed to fall back to SATA150 speed when connected to such drives. However, in practice some older SATA controllers do not implement SATA speed negotiation properly, and you can not be a 100% sure that a SATA300 hard drive will fit your laptop with a SATA150 controller.

However, if you are about to replace the hard drive in your MacBook, which is delivered from the factory with a SATA150 hard drive, you are able to replace it with a SATA300. I myself have replaced the original hard drive in my MacBook with a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB SATA 2.5 7200RPM 16MB G-Force hard drive with no problems at all.

iPhone 3G: No Sound

UPDATE: My iPhone was replaced with a brand new iPhone after being sent to Apple Support, so now that I have my second iPhone, I hope not to see the problem again – or any problems at all.

Recently, I experienced an issue with my iPhone, during phone calls the sound disappeared from the ear speaker, but when plugging in the headset or switching to the speaker (loudspeaker ) the sound was available. I was afraid the iPhone already after a couple of month had to be delivered to Apple Support/Service, but when I turned to my good friend, Google, I found some of methods through which people solved their sound problem:

Restart the iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the “Slide to power off” appears.
Soft reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
Restore your iPhone from iTunes (restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc.).
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. It will reset all your settings to its original state and NO harm is done to contacts, calendars, photos or any other data on the phone.
Plug and unplug headset jack several times.
Blowing air into the headset jack.
Blowing air into the ear speaker.

After trying some of the first mentioned methods with no luck, I did the last two – I don’t which one that did the trick, but somehow the sound returned. However, the iPhone must somehow be quite sensitive to dust in these components.

iPhone: Create and Download Free Ringtones

If you ended up on this page, you were properly also looking for a way to get free iPhone ringtones since Apple got the crazy idea that we should pay for ringtones. However, there is no need to use any money on ringtones for your iPhone. Simply go to audiko.net, which is a very nice service that allows you to upload your favourite music or audio files, cut out a fragment of up to 40 seconds, and download it to your iTunes Ringtones Library ready for synchronizing it to your iPhone. When a ringtone is made, it can also be share for others to use it.

This is easy way how to do it:

Go to audiko.net.
Search an artist or a song.
Choose a ringtone from the results.
Click the “Download Ringtone for iPhone” link.
Save the file and open it in iTunes.
Now the new ringtone is available in the Ringtones Library in iTunes
NOTE: As default the Ringtones Library is not shown, here is how to enable it. Go to iTunes > Preferences… > General > check the “Ringtones” checkbox, and now the Ringtones Library should be visible.

A nice little feature on the iPhone OS is to take a screen shot of iPhone’s display, here is how to do it: Quickly press and release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. A white flash of the screen lets you know the screenshot was taken. The created screenshot is added to the Camera Roll. So there is no need for an app or application on your 3G / 3GS to do the trick.

iPhone firmware 2.0.1 has been released by Apple

It seems that only bug fixes and no new features are included. Hopefully, applications will not crash anymore, and the scrolling will be smooth all the time.

UPDATE:

Following seems to be fixed in version 2.0.1:

Keyboard lag fixes
Contacts List lag fixes
Overall performance seems to be a bit snappier

Possible new features in iPhone 2.1 firmware:

Turn-by-Turn GPS Navigation
Core Location hooks for tracking your direction and speed
Cut, Copy, and Paste features
Applications will be able to run in the background

iPhone 3G: Disable slow iTunes backup (Mac and Windows)

Most iPhone 2.0 or iPhone 3G users have experienced the very slow backup process each time the iPhone is connected to iTunes, and as more applications are installed the process will take even longer. It is possible to just cancel the backup process, and then make a regular Sync without backing up. However, if you want avoid the backup process from starting, there is a workaround. It is possible disable the automatic backup process from starting, and how to do this is described below; firstly for Mac users, and secondly for Windows users:

Mac users:

Quit iTunes.
Open a Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
Type or copy the following command:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true
Open iTunes.
Connect the iPhone.
Make Sync without backing up.

To enable automatic backup in iTunes again use this command instead:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false

Note: If you previously have used the command line option that entirely disables the backup feature, then type this command as well to enable to backup process:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false

Recommendation: If you choose to disable the automatic backup process, it would be a good idea to manually making a backup it once a while to get a safe copy of text messages, call log and like (just right-click your iPhone icon in iTunes).

Windows Users: (updated)

Windows users can use the same approach:

Quit iTunes.
Press Win+R (opens the Windows Run dialog)
Type or copy the following command:
“%CommonProgramFiles%\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\defaults.exe” write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true
Open iTunes.
Connect the iPhone.
Make Sync without backing up.
